PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA (July 22, 2025)Starfish and the UBQ Network™, powered by DeltaTrak, have partnered to bring real-time traceability and shelf-life prediction together in one integrated solution.

This collaboration combines the UBQ Network’s Freshness Index™ and DeltaTrak’s IoT cold chain technology with Starfish’s GS1 EPCIS-based traceability engine. Together, we’re enabling the food supply chain to move beyond just tracking when and where events happen—to also understanding how, why, and what actions to take.

“In working with UBQ Network, we’re not just layering data—we’re providing context and actionable insight,” said Wiggs Civitillo, CEO of Starfish. “That’s the kind of visibility that helps food brands transform disconnected events into a continuous story they can act on in real time.”

At the heart of this partnership is the Freshness Index™, a proprietary algorithm that continuously calculates remaining shelf-life based on actual cold chain conditions—not static sell-by or best-before dates.

DeltaTrak’s submission outlined key outcomes for cold chain stakeholders, including:

  • Starfish enables FSMA 204-compliant traceability using EPCIS events
  • UBQ Network appends temperature data from DeltaTrak sensors and other digital sources
  • DeltaTrak’s model library calculates Remaining Shelf-Life Days across a wide range of commodities

Stakeholders at cross docks, DCs, stores, and restaurants can scan GS1 2D barcodes to access freshness data on the spot.

“The UBQ Network isn’t just delivering more data or dashboards—it’s delivering a smarter and more accountable cold chain,” said Karl McDermott, DeltaTrak. “We’re moving from fragmented tools to a connected ecosystem that predicts, adapts, and improves outcomes for every stakeholder.”

Pilots are already underway in fresh produce, seafood, and ready-to-eat foods—especially in foodservice, where shelf life and quality are critical.

We’ll be showcasing this partnership at the IFPA Global Show in October.
